Built to milk on forage – Deep-bodied — Capacity — Strength — Width

Lt. Dan's mother was one of the best structured cows in our herd and out of one of the longest-living cow families in our barn. She had incredible let down and a beautiful dairy form.

Her mother lived and reproduced until she was almost 15yo and was a 91-point cow. She was four-quartered in her last lactation and had some of the best manners of any animal we've ever known.

Lt. Dan himself is alive and well on a small commercial farm in Pennsylvania. His daughters are slick as calves and yearlings and do well on a high-forage diet.

Lt. Dan has been analyzed and deemed "structurally correct" and "without deficit" by leading dairy breeders when he was at stud. He is docile even at 6yo and an impressive character. His width, depth and capacity are evident, as is his slick and fly-resistant hide.

His sire was out of a foundation bull for Holt Creek Jerseys whose daughters have done well in our herd, with generally good letdowns. That is something that we pay a lot of attention to because all of our cows raise their own calves. We have not "proven" his daughters yet for this trait, but his pedigree and performance of his sisters suggests that he has good letdown despite not being an "udder" bull.

This is an important consideration given that letdown is a really strong "dairy" trait and in order to breed dairy animals away from frailty we need to impart some strength, capacity and width and Lt. Dan has these traits in spades, while also imparting some of his mother's femininity and dairy form.

As yearlings, his daughters are demonstrating a balance of strength and dairy quite well, especially when using on appropriate matings when balance is sought. I would not suggest using this bull on cows that are "meaty" in their udders, short-legged from the hoof to the hock, flat-footed or have poor udder attachment — not because he will impart these traits, but because he is unlikely to improve them. He has remarkably well-structured feet for his depth of body, and a relatively flat topline, something else that is rare to see in an animal as deep-bodied as he is.

Lt. Dan's real strength is roundness. He will fix larger barrels and greater capacity for forage in his daughters. He also has incredible depth and width. His daughters will have wider pelvises and more room in the chest for heart and lung functions, which decreases susceptivity to respiratory challenges. He has an elegant and intelligent head, which is an often overlooked trait in improving performance in pasture-based systems, as it lowers stress and improves vision and forage uptake with a larger mouth and wider nose and correctly set eyes.

We are excited about our Lt. Dan daughters and have bred him to some of our more fragile and "type-y" cows with good results.

*There is a minimum order of five conventional straws per bull, and conventional straws are sold in multiples of five.

*For a $5 discount per straw, order ten or more straws of the same bull; discount will automatically be applied in your cart.

*There is no minimum for purchasing sexed straws. We recommend purchasing a minimum of three sexed straws per animal to settle. If breeding multiple animals, you can use a lower multiplier because the law of averages means at least one of your cows hopefully settles on the first service, freeing up other straws for multiple services.

**Usually, we ship on Mondays from our distributor in Michigan. Please plan on allowing two weeks for an order to arrive, because sometimes the tank won’t ship until the following Monday. Because of the special nature of the packaging (a vapor tank inside of a plastic shipper), it sometimes happens that the distributor hasn’t received enough shippers back from other customers to ship out a new order, so they have to wait for the return of the shippers. DO NOT WAIT TO ORDER UNTIL IT'S TIME TO BREED!

**TO AVOID an extra charge of $150 for a complete nitrogen refill, tanks must be dropped off at UPS within three days of receipt and sent back using the pre-paid label that is included in your one-time shipping cost. Tanks that are not returned are subject to a $1500 replacement fee. You agree to these fees for failure to comply when you purchase the semen. We are a family-run business and if there is an extenuating circumstance, please reach out.

****If you are local to Graham, North Carolina and would like to pick up on farm instead of having your order shipped, please first email bulls[at]reverencefarms.com to check availability and receive a custom invoice. There is a $50 on-farm pickup fee.
