Pistol-P is an impressive dude. His mother was a South Poll out of a well-respected all-grass program in NC and his sire was from the original herd of New Zealand Red Devons that came over to the United States on a 747. I developed this animal to have the fly resistance of a South Poll and adaptability to fescue and heat tolerance along with the meat qualities of a Red Devon. You simply will not find a more adapted beef animal to cross on a dairy animal, especially because his calves are small enough to justify breeding him to a dairy animal. We have used him to breed our heifers and had no issues.
Pistol was born in 2019 and has sired many healthy calves that do extremely well to improve marbling, forage-efficiency and livability traits. His calves graze at three days old.
He is POLLED. The nubs he has are scurs, not horns. Pistol is heterozygous polled. 50% of his calves will be polled when put on horned cows, and the scurs may not necessarily transfer as that trait sorts independently. They take many years to grow and are not a true "horn," as they are not attached to the head. Scurs can be disbudded just like horns but they don't need to be, especially on an animal that will be harvested for beef as they will not develop during the grow-out anywhere near the size of Pistol's, who was 7 years old when this video was taken.
On a dairy animal, he tends to have offspring with island whites and occasionally brindle.
