We have raised hundreds and hundreds of calves on their own dairy mothers over the past two decades, and suffice it to say that we know your woes and challenges with this otherwise beautiful practice.
We've tried every weaning ring. Every nose ring on the market and quite a few that aren't. We designed several of our own and prototyped them. We even had a friend in plastics manufacturing working on a model for us. Tears were shed (really). The calves kept getting smarter (here's to breeding for strength and intelligence!).
After we finally tried this particular nose ring, we dropped everything else and we have had 100% success rate with it. Our previous best attempts had about a 90% efficacy rate.
Calves simply cannot nurse around it, even by tilting their heads. It is meant for larger calves, at least 5-6 months old. Delayed weaning is vital for growth and development, and this is the first nose ring we've found to be up for the job.
The cheap pinchers and clamper types invariably leave a hole in the nose and get painfully stuck and sometimes require surgical removal. We have not had that happen a single time with this style of nose ring (although not saying it is impossible, certainly).
The only challenge we have had with these is that occasionally they fall out and we have to find them in the field and wash them and put them back in, but that occasional inconvenience is so much better than the high failure and injury rates with every other nose ring we have previously bought or made.
We can't say enough good things about this nose ring. To apply, restrain the animal, warm the nose ring in a bucket of warm water and twist to apply to one nostril than the next. You may have to temporarily change the shape of the animal's nose to apply.
